Graphics Projects
It all began with a serendipitous glitch. While working on my very first automated music scoring system on an Apple II, I accidentally dumped a few kilobytes of memory to the printer. What emerged was a chaotic tapestry of code and symbols—nonsense to most eyes. But my friend, the brilliant visual artist Tom Martin, saw something else. He rescued the printout from the trash, took it into his studio, and transformed it into an astounding poster for our upcoming electronic music performance. That unexpected fusion of technology and art sparked a journey I could never have anticipated.
Since that pivotal moment, I’ve immersed myself in the world of visual storytelling. I’ve owned hundreds of cameras, explored dozens of graphics programs, and produced art that has graced films and posters. The rich field of visual effects combined with video became my playground, allowing me to create music videos and illustrations that push the boundaries of imagination.
In the early 2000s, my team and I ventured into the emerging realm of virtual reality. We produced a series of interactive travel videos featuring the San Francisco Presidio, inviting viewers to experience its beauty in an entirely new dimension. Midway through the project, my brilliant partner Amber had a flash of genius: “Let’s put a purchase button in the VR app.” Acting on her insight, we integrated the feature, and within two years, we generated almost $200,000 in room reservations directly from the app. It was a testament to the power of combining creativity with innovation.
Recently, we’ve come full circle, returning to the synchrony of sound and vision. By integrating After Effects with green-screen performances and real-time MIDI input, we’ve conjured a cosmic drummer who pounds away inside a 3D Dolby Atmos environment, perfectly synchronized with the original performance. It’s a culmination of years of exploration, a harmonious blend of technology and artistry that inspires us to reach for the stars.
